Council To Vote On Kerbside Green WasteCouncil To Vote On Kerbside Green Waste By Bass Coast - 20th February 2015 - Back to News The recommendation from Council Officers is to conclude the trial, which was offered to selected residents on Phillip Island and will run its course as of 15 March 2015.
Council’s Acting General Manager Sustainable Development and Growth, Jodi Kennedy, said 610 properties took up the offer at the height of the three part trial, with a satisfaction rate of 94.5 per cent.
"While the initial take-up rate and subsequent participation in stage two of the kerbside green waste collection trial was quite positive, participant numbers in stage three saw a reduction in numbers of almost four per cent," Ms Kennedy said.
"We attributed this fluctuation to interest in a new service and the variation in seasonal green waste."
Ms Kennedy said Council is currently developing the Bass Coast Shire Waste Management Strategy 2015-25 to be completed by 30 June 2015.
"We intend to undertake a full feasibility study, including a cost benefit analysis to introduce a three bin system across the Shire," Ms Kennedy said.
"Information gained from the trial will be used in this study and will allow us to make an informed decision regarding resources and demand, alignment with State government policy and the Gippsland Waste and Resource Recovery Group strategies and plan."
Ms Kennedy said all participants were aware the trial would only run from September 2013 until March 2015, and it would be difficult to justify continuing the trial past its expiration date due to the limited participation numbers and lack of processing options.
"Until the new strategy identifies the direction Council will take green waste collection in future, Phillip Island residents can dispose of green waste at the Cowes Public Place Recycling Bank in Dunsmore Road," Ms Kennedy said.
All participants will receive notification from Council following a decision at the Ordinary Council Meeting on 18 February 2015.
