Council confident on sale yards future

Wellington Shire Council has again publicly stated it plans to retain ownership of the sale yards in Sale.

By Wellington Shire Council - 6th July 2006 - Back to News

The comments come after the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission recently called for comment on the acquisition of the Sale and Korumburra sale yards by the Victorian Livestock Exchange.

Ralf Kastan, Director of Assets and Operations for Wellington Shire Council said that council has not considered selling or closing the facility.

"Council plans to continue ownership of the saleyards. We are currently progressing with the establishment of a modern facility within the Sale area in recognition of the importance of providing state of the art saleyards facility within the Shire" said Mr Kastan.

"We have new operators. As of Monday the VLE have taken over the lease for the Sale Livestock Exchange operation. Wellington Shire Council looks forward to working with the new lessee and hopes this will allow us to focus on working towards a successful future" said Mr Kastan.

Mayor Malcolm Hole confirmed council was committed to retaining the stockyards

"We recognise that they are of great economic importance to our area- not only for our primary industry but also because of the jobs and strength it gives to our retail sector.

"Currently around 45 thousand head of cattle a year go through the yards. However this is a drought affected number, in recent years we have had over 60 thousand. We look forward to returning to those higher numbers as the industry gains strength" said Councillor Hole.
