Staff Help Out In Flood Zone

Three Bass Coast Shire Council staff members have gone to Buloke Shire Council in North Western Victoria to help members of the community displaced by the Victorian Flood.

By Bass Coast - 24th January 2011 - Back to News

CEO, Allan Bawden, said the staff were working in Charlton and Donald, two of the towns most affected by the Victorian flood crisis.

"These relief and recovery centres operate 24 hours, so it is important the staff there are provided with some relief," said Mr Bawden.

"We are part of an agreement between Victorian municipalities to provide assistance in emergencies when and if they arise.

"Two staff members are working night shift at the relief centre in Donald helping people who have been evacuated from their homes.

"Another staff member will work from the Charlton recovery centre which provides assistance to people moving back into their houses and communities now that the water has subsided.

"Not only is this a good opportunity for our staff to help out others in need, it also is good experience for them in the event that we face an emergency situation here.

"Being a smaller Shire, Buloke has fewer than 200 staff to manage this emergency as well as their day to day operations," continued Mr Bawden.

Buloke Shire Council includes the towns of Birchip, Charlton, Donald, Sea Lake and Wycheproof.

The staff will work at the centres for three days, including the weekend.
