Preparing the ground for new Heyfield Hub community complex

Wellington Shire Council is finalising preparations for work to commence on the major new Heyfield Hub community complex, which represents a substantial $740,000 revamp of the present Heyfield Library and public hall.

By Wellington Shire Council - 11th February 2004 - Back to News

Funding for the project, which is expected to get underway next month includes $280,000 from the State Government, $153,000 from the Federal Government through its Rural Transaction Centre program, $235,000 from Wellington Shire Council and $70,000 from the local community.

Set for completion this coming winter, the initiative includes provision for:

  • a dramatic expansion of the library section from 38 sq.m to 230 sq.m, to enable a big increase in the number of books and audio-visual items stocked, along with a new dedicated area for PCs;
  • an upgrade of the hall;
  • new toilet facilities and a new kitchen;
  • installation of a ramp to improve access to the complex for those with a disability.

To enable the work to proceed, Heyfield Public Library is being temporarily relocated from its MacFarlane Street site to Shop 3, 58-60 Temple Street, for the duration of the project. The library will be closed to the public on the afternoon of Tuesday 16 February to allow for the move, and will reopen at 2.00pm on Thursday 18 February in Temple Street, where normal operating hours will resume.

The Council apologises in advance for any inconvenience this relocation might cause, which will be kept to a minimum. The end result will more than compensate.

All of the library’s existing resources and facilities including book and audio-visual loans, internet access, childrens’ storytimes and programs will be available from the new, temporary site.

Anyone who would like more information about the relocation should call 1300 366 244 or visit the library.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "Any disruption that might accompany the temporary relocation of the library will be kept to a minimum and we appreciate the community’s patience. We’re now finalising details on the much-needed new complex, which should prove a real boon to the Heyfield community and we look forward to progressing work on site in the near future."
