Community input wanted on new Library and Learning Centre in Baw Baw Shire by 12 September 2023
Baw Baw Shire seeks community input for New Library and Learning Centre through informal community conversation sessions across multiple locations.
Council is urging community members from around Baw Baw Shire to share their ideas about the way the new Library and Learning Centre will operate and service our community. The Library and Learning centre is the first stage of the Baw Baw Culture and Connection Precinct and will feature dedicated children's and teens sections, maker's space, video gaming, reading rooms and study areas as well as providing a mix of services and facilities including:
- Arts and cultural presentation space
- Visitor Information Services
- Community meeting rooms
- Consulting rooms
- Co-working spaces
- Cafe
- Public terrace area
- Public amenities such as a parent's room and Changing Places facility
Mayor of Baw Baw Shire Cr Annemarie McCabe said, "We'd like to invite you to attend a free Community Conversation session about the Library and Learning Centre. It will be an opportunity for you to tell us what you think is important, and to hear what we've been learning from others in the community. We want to show you what we've been planning and confirm that we are getting the mix of facilities and services right."
Council is hosting informal community conversation sessions to discuss themes and gather ideas for the Library and Learning Centre development
Community conversations
The Community Conversations will be held in multiple locations across Baw Baw Shire:
- Trafalgar: Tuesday 29 August 2023, 5:30 PM, Trafalgar Community Centre
- Drouin: Friday 1 September 2023, 5:30 PM, Drouin Tennis Club
- Warragul : Monday 4 September 2023, 5:30 PM, The Goods Shed, Warragul
- Longwarry : Tuesday 5 September, 5:30 PM, Longwarry Public Hall
- Neerim South: Monday 11 September 2023, 5:30 PM, Algie Hall, Neerim South
- Yarragon : Tuesday 12 September 2023, 5:30 PM, Yarragon Public Hall

Inclusive community input
Mayor McCabe said,"These Community Conversation sessions will be informal and designed to give everyone a say in a considerate and fun way. If this project is meaningful to you and you have ideas or something to say, please come along and share your thoughts."
To inform the sessions, council has been working with Outside the Square Creative Consulting to conduct targeted stakeholder consultation to develop a preliminary plan for how the facility will be managed and what services it will offer. "We want the new Library and Learning Centre to run in a way which best reflects the needs and aspirations of our community now and into the future," said the Mayor.
One-on-one conversations
To date the team has met for one-on-one conversations with more than 40 local stakeholders spanning:
- Community groups
- Arts sector
- Healthcare and youth services
- Sporting groups
- Co-working and tech businesses
- Secondary and tertiary education providers
- First nations communities
- Churches and social support organisations
- Service clubs
- Advocacy bodies
