$6 million Gippsland Lakes funding welcomed: Ingram

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has welcomed the State Government’s commitment of $6 million over three years for the third phase of the Gippsland Lakes future directions and action plan.

The commitment is contained as part of the State Government’s sustainability action statement, which was released yesterday.

"The funding for the Gippsland Lakes builds on the excellent work of local farmers in implementing water reuse strategies and farm plans designed to reduce nutrient run off and the impact on the lakes," Mr Ingram said.

"The Gippsland Coastal Board, local government, water and catchment authorities and industry have been working together to identify and address nutrient inputs and pollution point sources to improve the long term environmental condition of the Gippsland Lakes.

"The government’s continued commitment to the future directions and action plan is an important step.

"Whilst I would have preferred a longer term commitment -- at least over four years, as requested by the Coastal Board instead of the three year commitment announced -- it is still a welcome funding commitment.

"This will allow continuation of the works to reduce point source pollution and nutrient run-off into the region’s rivers and lake systems.

"This is an issue of enormous importance; the future of the environmental condition of the Gippsland Lakes is dependent on the continued commitment of governments -- both State and Federal -- to assist landholders in addressing nutrient runoff.

"The State Government should now seek a matching commitment from the Federal Government through the national water initiative, which will further enhance the work of the action plan.

"The Gippsland Lakes are our region’s most important natural asset and are suffering significant long term environmental challenges. The solutions are extremely complex and require a long term commitment of government," Mr Ingram concluded.
