Easter In Gippsland

The Minister for Roads together with local MPs Russell Northe and Darren Chester have encouraged Victorians to explore the Gippsland region this Easter holiday period.

In a visit to the Latrobe Valley today, Minister for Roads Terry Mulder said the Gippsland region has a great deal to offer, with a wide range of destinations that would suit most travellers.

"I encourage everyone to get behind the regional tourism industry and participate in the wide variety of exciting regional events available for you to experience," he said.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe said the recent closure of the Princes Freeway should not deter families from visiting this wonderful region and its many attractions.

"Gippsland is open for business, and our friendly local tourist operators will give you and your family a warm welcome and show you a great time over Easter.

"By enjoying the natural wonders of our parks and beaches or savouring the local produce and wine at our world-renowned restaurants and wineries there are so many options for you to enjoy your break which also provides a much-needed economic boost to our region."

Federal Member for Gippsland Darren Chester encouraged locals to consider extending their trip for an extra day or two.

"When we support local shops or take a holiday in Gippsland, we’re helping to create jobs in our own community," Mr Chester said.

"There are dozens of great places to visit over Easter and you and your families will enjoy exploring the attractions in our own backyard."

Minister Mulder said in response to the closure of the Princes Highway, VicRoads had prepared a traffic management plan in conjunction with police, local government and the Department of Transport in anticipation of increased traffic in the lead up to and during Easter.

"This includes recent lane changes along Princes Drive to allow drivers to travel on two lanes Eastbound for the majority of the diversion route," he said.

"More directional signs will also be put in place along other alternate routes in the area. The South Gippsland highway will also be promoted as another access route to Eastern Victoria from South-Eastern parts of Melbourne."

"Police are also preparing warning/information signs as far back as Yarragon and Trafalgar and will be utilising an Emergency Management Broadcasting system which will cut into car radios when in range and broadcast safety/information and delay times regularly to travellers.

"VicRoads is providing regular updates though the media to keep the public updated on detour arrangements and any works that are being undertaken to maintain the safety of the detour.

"To make sure you are fully informed; please monitor the VicRoads website (www.vicroads.vic.gov.au) regularly.

"So please be aware when travelling on our roads, to make sure you travel safely, and have an enjoyable and happy Easter holiday break."
