Myer Street in Lakes Entrance begins major transformation to enhance safety and accessibility

Starting this month, East Gippsland Shire Council will transform Lakes Entrance's Myer Street to enhance safety, accessibility, and appeal for residents and visitors.

Lakes Entrance's busy Myer Street will undergo a major transformation starting this month, as East Gippsland Shire Council rolls out measures to improve safety and accessibility for residents and make the town even more appealing for visitors. "This isn't just about fixing a road," said Mayor Cr Tom Crook. "It's about creating a better experience and a more vibrant environment for our community."

Street upgrade enhances

Council will deliver an upgrade of Myer Street including improving school crossings, around 2100m of additional footpath, widening existing footpaths and improving traffic flow. The upgrades will also include new pathway connections, raised asphalt platforms and improved drainage systems. Traffic changes will include new entry and exit points for the service road near Lakes Entrance Primary School. The school has been collaborating with the council on the project.

Footpaths will be extended from Penang Boardwalk to Daniel Street and will be upgraded between the police station and FoodWorks, including the addition of a raised crossing. The Church Street crossing will also be upgraded. "We're not just thinking about cars," Cr Crook added. "We're boosting pedestrian safety, especially for our schoolchildren." The project, set to begin in days, is expected to be completed before the holiday season.

The project, funded by the Australian government and council, was awarded to local company Whelans Group Investments after a public tender process. "Our goal is to minimise disruptions while maximising benefits," Cr Crook explained. "We're grateful for the community's patience as we work to improve this key transport and pedestrian corridor," Cr Crook said.
