Who Let The Dogs Out?

Latrobe City Council has noticed an increasing trend of dogs being exercised unleashed at sporting grounds and recreation reserve; potentially causing a nuisance to other users of these facilities.

By Latrobe City - 7th November 2013 - Back to News

Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Sandy Kam, said that under the Domestic Animal Act 1994 the owner of a dog must not allow that dog to wander at large or cause a nuisance. Penalties for failing to comply with this requirement are high.

"We do encourage socialisation of domestic pets as it has such a positive effect on an animal’s behaviour. However, it’s important to ensure dogs remain leashed unless being exercised at one of Council’s four designated off-leash areas. Off-leash areas provide a great opportunity for owners and their dogs to exercise and socialise with other pets and their owners.

"Dogs should not be unleashed or allowed to wander in sporting or recreation reserves as such facilities are used by the general public. Families using these facilities to exercise and play should not be troubled or threatened by unleashed dogs. It’s just not fair to other users," Cr Kam said.

"In the lead up to Christmas and the summer holiday period, when you may be out and about a lot more, it’s worth checking your fences and gates to make sure your dog cannot escape. Also make sure your dog is microchipped, registered and desexed. This will allow us to reunite animals with their owners as quickly as possible if they are lost.

"Owning a pet is a responsibility and that includes being responsible should your dog escape or pose a nuisance or danger to the wider community," Cr Kam concluded.
