Insurance lifeline relief for local community groups

Wellington Shire Council welcomes as great news the Municipal Association of Victoria’s (MAV) decision to continue offering not-for-profit community groups and events the safety net of affordable public liability insurance cover.

By Wellington Shire Council - 16th June 2003 - Back to News

wellingtonAs a result of securing overseas re-insurance, MAV has announced that it will now be able to continue its previously threatened community groups insurance scheme for the next three years. This will come as a big relief for local members of the scheme such as festivals, historical societies, senior citizens clubs, arts cultural, conservation and heritage, recreational, youth and disability groups. Many would otherwise have faced the prospect of prohibitive insurance premiums from elsewhere, perhaps threatening their existence and the invaluable service they provide to the local community.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "This is a great result. It means that many community groups, previously worried that they wouldn’t be able to get insurance over the coming year and perhaps concerned about there very existence, can now breathe a sigh of relief."

Local community groups who would like more information about the insurance scheme can contact Wellington Shire Council’s Susie Hatwell on 5142 3492. Alternatively phone MAV direct on 9860 3470 or 9860 3434, or visit their web site www.communityinsurance.com.au
