Country Racing and Latrobe City Council meet over Traralgon RacecourseLatrobe City Council and Country Racing Victoria have met to discuss the future of the Traralgon Racecourse By Latrobe City Council - 27th May 2002 - Back to News Latrobe City Council and Country Racing Victoria have met to discuss the future of the Traralgon Racecourse. The two bodies met following CRV’s decision to recommend that Racing Victoria Limited revoke Traralgon Racing Club’s registration.
The purpose of the meeting was for CRV to fully brief Latrobe City Council on the circumstances surrounding the decision and the financial and operational issues involved.
CRV chairman, Dr George Corones said he had explained the situation to the mayor and his officials to achieve a better understanding of what would be required to conduct the three race meetings planned for Traralgon before the end of this year.
"We stressed the need for community support to make these meetings a success," said Dr Corones.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said that the council was keen to involve a community group to work with the racing industry to ensure effective promotion of the three meetings.
"Council will maintain a strong commitment to the Traralgon Racecourse facility, and we will do what we can to ensure there is a continued presence here in Traralgon. Not only is this an important facility for sports followers throughout Latrobe, but it is also important to the economic prosperity of the region, attracting race followers from Melbourne and beyond," Cr Jenkins said.
"Council however, can only do so much. The future of racing at Traralgon is very much dependent on community commitment and support. We will be meeting with representative groups and individuals in our community to see how we can help the process of maintaining this facility and furthering racing in Latrobe," Cr Jenkins added.
Following a meeting of members of Traralgon Racing Club on 12 June, when their committee will seek members’ agreement to wind up operations, the responsibility for maintaining the facility will revert to the council.
"The council has sought more information regarding keeping the facility open," said Dr Corones. "They want to know the cost of maintaining the racecourse and facilities for three meetings as well as gaining a better understanding of costs and other issues associated with maintaining a training facility at Traralgon.
"CRV and Latrobe City Council will continue to work on a joint approach to facilitate the staging of three successive racing events at Traralgon over the next twelve months.
"We will also continue to evaluate the possibility of the provision of limited training facilities until the end of this year," said Dr Corones.
There is an interim arrangement for trainers to continue to use Traralgon’s sand track on a limited basis and CRV has also offered travel subsidies for trainers to use other facilities.
