East Gippsland and Wellington Shires sign MOU

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between East Gippsland and Wellington Shires was signed in Lakes Entrance today, ahead of a joint meeting of the two councils.

By Wellington Shire Council - 31st May 2005 - Back to News

The MOU commits the councils to work collaboratively towards the economic, social and environmental sustainability of the region.

East Gippsland Mayor Cr Jane Rowe said cooperation between the two shires would provide additional strength over the negotiating tables in a number of forums.

"It is particularly important where we have things in common such as roads, environmental and social issues, tourism and especially where we need a common approach to the State and Federal Governments," she said.

Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault said the MOU was important, especially given all that both shires had in common.

"As two of the state’s largest shires we account for almost 15% of Victoria’s total land area, have a major slice of the state’s most productive farmland, and a strong commercial and industrial base," he said.

"Our striking 30 percent of the Victorian coastline includes the famous Ninety Mile Beach well as which we share the iconic Gippsland Lakes, probably the most beautiful lakes system in Australia.

"When you add to this our forests, rivers and mountain regions, we tell a very impressive story," he said.

Cr Gault there was strength in numbers and standing together to promote and protect the interests of the eastern corner of Victoria would boost joint effectiveness.

The MOU that will be reviewed within six months of each council election will commit the councils to pursue a united voice as part of the broader Gippsland region while respecting individual differences.

The councils will also actively pursue opportunities for sharing resources that may include plant and equipment; human resources; intellectual property and information technology.

Other key provisions include:

  • Acknowledgement that regional planning and economic development will provide benefits to both Shires and development of strategies that are either integrated or complementary in nature.
  • Development of an integrated approach to issues that go beyond parochial municipal boundaries including transport and road funding, waste management; Gippsland Lakes planning and management; economic development and tourism and employment.
  • Development of agreement for asset ownership, management and maintenance.

The MOU also provides that the two councils will meet at least twice annually to review progress on issues, identify strategic opportunities and discuss any new matters of strategic importance to the region.

The Senior Management Teams of both Councils will meet independently of the two Councils at least twice annually to advance the implementation of the MOU and the achievement of specific outcomes.

Currently the councils are undertaking a joint "Eastern Coastal Towns" study to determine the future needs of sixteen coastal towns on the east coast.
