carbon future in the Valley.

Latrobe City Council’s deputy mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said that Council was pleased to see a range of projects and initiatives included in the report as a result of its work.

"Our own submission to the report, adopted in May 2012, asked governments to show a ‘positive bias’ to the Latrobe Valley as the region seeks to offset the potential loss of jobs in its transition to a low-carbon economy. Council called for action on numerous development opportunities already identified in our 'Securing Our Future' document. Council has been happy to play a very active role in the development of the LVTC ‘Report to Governments’.

"This development role included support for job creation initiatives, $5 million for infrastructure on the former Lurgi site, $10 million for the Gippsland Logistics Precinct, brown coal and energy research grants and expedited brown coal-related projects and funding for a Social Impact Analysis.

Cr Gibson added that these projects were just the tip of the iceberg of our ‘asks’ and ‘needs’.

"We would ask that the Victorian State and Australian governments now move quickly to prioritise these projects, and commit to immediate funding. We ask for a proactive approach to meet the predicted effects the Australian Government’s change in policy will have on the Latrobe Valley community.

"Latrobe City supports international and Australian efforts to address climate change but is also concerned that its own economy and community continue to prosper. With appropriate transition mechanisms in place, we believe that both climate change mitigation and economic growth can be achieved.

"Council looks forward to continuing its own proactive approach, and to working closely with both Victorian State and Australian governments to successfully transition our community to a low carbon economy," Cr Gibson concluded.
