Gippsland Water celebrates Women and Girls in Science Day showcasing Taylor Woods as role model in environmental science
Gippsland Water honours staff on International Day of Women and Girls in Science, highlighting the importance of gender diversity and showcasing Taylor Woods as a role model in environmental science.
On the ninth annual International Day of Women and Girls in Science (IDWGS), Gippsland Water is recognising staff who keep the taps running. Each year on February 11, IDW GS aims to close the gender gap in science and celebrate the achievements of women in the field. Managing director Sarah Cumming said it is important to encourage more women and girls to pursue a career in science and in the water industry.
Gippsland Water Wastewater Treatment Compliance Specialist Taylor Woods is broadening her experiences to become a mentor for women in science
Empowering Women in STEM
Ms Cumming said, "Much of what we do would not be possible without the expertise and experience of our staff working in science. However, we are very aware women continue to be outnumbered in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) across Australia. So we're shining a light on the pathways and experiences of women currently knocking down barriers to open up pathways for others."
Taylor Woods is a Wastewater Treatment Compliance Specialist at Gippsland Water. Her role focuses on strengthening collaboration within the business in the area of environmental stewardship. "I studied Environmental Science - Wildlife and Conservation - at university. I've always been drawn to nature, its beauty, and the sense of calm it brings when you're immersed in it."
Ms Woods said she didn't encounter many female mentors early in her career and instead found herself looking outside her immediate field to find women to learn from. "I'm proud to have taken the opportunities I've had' I'm continually developing and broadening my experiences so I can be a mentor for other women and girls in science in the future."
