Coastal Action Plan For Gippsland Estuaries

Gippsland estuaries are under the spotlight with the development of the Gippsland Estuaries Coastal Action Plan about to begin.

By Department of Sustainability and Environment - 27th July 2005 - Back to News

The Coastal Action Plan (CAP) is being developed by the Gippsland Coastal Board and will identify strategic management issues for estuaries across Gippsland to ensure their sustainable management and use into the future.

Note that the Gippsland Lakes are not included in this Coastal Action Plan as there are already a number of plans in place for the Lakes system.

Estuaries are a crucial part of many river systems, as well as providing environmental, economic and social benefits to local communities and the broader State of Victoria.

In the estuarine environment, nutrient-rich fresh water mixes with highly oxygenated waters from the ocean making them the most biologically productive regions of the marine and coastal environment.

Social values include boating, fishing, picnicking, walking and nature observation, while tourism, commercial fishing and coastal development generate significant economic value to the region.

Duncan Malcolm, Chair of the Gippsland Coastal Board said that the Coastal Action Plan will provide the single overarching planning framework for the management of our estuaries.

"This Plan will provide a clear vision for their ongoing sustainable use and development," Mr Malcolm said. "The Gippsland Lakes have justifiably received a great deal of attention, and now it is time to address our remaining estuaries."

The development of the CAP will begin during August with a round of community workshops aimed at identifying values and risks to estuaries across Gippsland from the local community and users of these environments.

"The value of these workshops is to gain a collective understanding of the community perspective of those aspects of estuaries that are important and in need of protection through improved management and policy frameworks across Gippsland," Mr Malcolm said.

"Given recent environmental impacts associated with the illegal opening of an estuary in Western Victoria, these workshops are timely to ensure that our estuaries in Gippsland are effectively managed."

Workshops are being held in locations ranging from Mallacoota to Inverloch with the dates and venues being advertised in local newspapers. To register interest please contact the Gippsland Coastal Board on 03 5152 0451, or for further information please contact the Estuaries CAP Project Officer at the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority on 03 5662 4555.
