Power In Slip Road To Go Underground

East Gippsland Shire Councillors have voted to enter into an agreement with SP AusNet to place powerlines underground in Slip Road, Paynesville.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 8th September 2008 - Back to News

The agreement follows concerns at the risk of electrocution from the increasing number of high masted yachts requiring maintenance in the Slip Road marine precinct

Marine business operators have long campaigned for the existing overhead powerlines to be placed underground.

The project will be funded by a State Government grant as well as contributions from SP AusNet, affected property owners and East Gippsland Shire Council. Gippsland Ports are also expected to contribute.

Slip Road has a high level of vehicle and public activity and provides access to the Gippsland Ports slipway, Slip Bight Marina, the Paynesville Motor Cruiser Club, marine retail outlets, the King Street boat ramp and car/trailer parking area and boat charter operations.

Shire CEO Steve Kozlowski said business operators would benefit because underground powerlines remove the danger involved in moving masted yachts between different workshops, slipway facilities and boat ramps.

"The project will remove a dangerous public hazard and lead to more efficient service delivery to meet increasing customer demand for a one-stop location for boating services," he said.
