Nominations open to for young people for 2022 Youth Council in Wellington Shire
Wellington Shire Council is calling on young people who want to have a greater say and help build a strong and inclusive community, to nominate for 2022 Youth Council.
Youth Councillors work to make Wellington a more positive and engaging place for youth by representing them in the community, creating and participating in local events, and working towards solving issues relevant to young people.
Council is encouraging the youth to send their applications for Youth Council, application is OPEN from 4 October to 14 November 2021
Improving youth leadership skills
The Youth Council is made up of a diverse group of 18 motivated young people aged between 12 and 25 years who live or work in Wellington Shire. The group develops and implements an annual Youth Council Action Plan supporting Healthy Wellington, and consults with local young people to advocate for their needs and create opportunities for them to participate in their communities.
Wellington Shire Council Mayor Garry Stephens said Youth Council was also an excellent way for young people to improve their leadership skills. "Young Councillors play an important role in encouraging other young people to participate in programs which are relevant to them," Cr Stephens said.
Wellington Shire Council supports a number of programs and activities each year that give young people a chance to grow their skills and learn new ones, to lead and have a voice on important issues, and to meet new people
Insights on how the government works
Cr Stephens also said, "The skills that Youth Councillors learn can not only put them on the path to becoming community leaders, but also help them in their current studies and future careers. They will also get a great insight into how local government works."
Youth Councillors are appointed for a two-year term after an interview and selection process. They elect a Youth Mayor and Deputy Youth Mayor, a Youth Secretary and a Youth Treasurer, and meet regularly to explore issues important to young people across Wellington Shire. Applications are open until 14 November by visiting Wellington Shire Youth Council application page.
