Fire Prevention Committees

East Gippsland Shire Council’s Municipal Fire Prevention Committee (MFPC) has had both a hectic and productive past year, as all associated with fire management strive to stop a repeat of last year’s devastating bushfires.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 14th January 2004 - Back to News

The MFPC comprises four sub-committees in East Gippsland – Bairnsdale (covering Bairnsdale and district brigades), Orbost (covering brigades from Orbost to the New South Wales border), Omeo (covering the high country) and Lakes Entrance (covering Lakes Entrance and district).

East Gippsland Shire Municipal Fire Prevention Officer, Terry Lamshed, is Chairman of the four committees and receives support from Assistant Fire Prevention Officers, Hedley Allen, Lorraine Archbold and Jack Unmack.

Terry said the committees comprise various personnel from rural fire brigades, along with representatives from other agencies such as the CFA, DSE, TXU and VicRoads, as well as the CFA Community Safety Manager.

"Each sub committee meets twice a year to discuss relevant fire management topics from all areas of East Gippsland," Terry said.

"The duties of the committees include planning the burning or clearing of firebreaks, advising the appropriate authorities of potential fire hazards and providing recommendations to the Shire’s fire prevention plan.

"We also recommend to appropriate authorities any action which the committees deem necessary to be taken for reducing the risk of an outbreak of fire or for suppressing any fire which may occur within the area.

"Prior to the meetings I tour each of the brigade areas with the MFPC delegates, which results in a comprehensive fire prevention works list throughout East Gippsland Shire that is discussed at the meetings.

"Some of these issues include roadside burning, road access maintenance, debris removal from firebreak roads and cleaning out water points.

"As many Shire residents realised last year, all issues associated with fire prevention are crucial particularly in East Gippsland, where a large part of the region is bushland," Terry said.

Bairnsdale sub-committee members include fire brigade delegates from Bairnsdale, Bengworden, Fernbank, Flaggy Creek, Glenaladale, Hillside, Lindenow, Mount Taylor, Paynesville, Sarsfield and Bairnsdale Group.

Orbost sub-committee members include fire brigade delegates from Bendoc, Bonang, Orbost, Bemm River, Cann Valley, Mallacoota, Marlo, Newmerella, Wairewa and Orbost Group.

Omeo sub-committee members include fire brigade delegates from Benambra, Ensay, Omeo, Swifts Creek and Omeo Group.

Lakes Entrance sub-committee members include fire brigade delegates from Kalimna West, Lakes Entrance, Metung, Mossi-Tambo, Toorloo, Gelantipy, Bruthen, Buchan, Bumberrah and Lakes Entrance Group.

"If anyone has an issue with fire management in your area, contact your brigade captain who will raise the concern with the MFPC delegate," Terry said.
