Mosquitos netted in control program

Wellington Shire Council has kicked off its annual mosquito control program which will see Mosquito Monitors patrolling the Shire between now and April to identify and eradicate disease-carrying mosquitos by targeting potential trouble-spots.

Residents and visitors to Shire coastal areas are advised to wear loose, protective clothing, and apply DEET based repellent to exposed skin to avoid being bitten.

Wellington’s Environmental Health Officer, Dani Hasthorpe stresses that while the Council is taking necessary precautions to help control breeding, the community can also assist by implementing preventative measures on their properties.

"Keeping yards tidy and free of water-carrying rubbish, regularly mowing grass, and filling in areas that collect low-lying water, are all effective ways of keeping mosquito breeding at bay.

"Ferns and bracken are also hot-spots for mosquitos, so residents who spend time amongst heavily vegetated areas, should be wary."

Further information on mosquito control and bite prevention can be obtained by contacting Wellington Shire Council’s Environmental Health Unit on 5142 3410.
