Bass Coast Local News:
Free meningococcal vaccination

Bass Coast Shire Council is urging teens aged between 15 to 19 years to get their meningococcal vaccinations which are available free of charge until 31 December 2017.

Council has finished running school sessions where Year 10 to Year 12 students were able to receive the free vaccine, and are holding drop in immunisation sessions for any teens who have yet to receive the vaccine.

The sessions will be held from 10.30am to 12.30pm on 14 November and 12 December at St Phillips Parish Hall in Cowes. Also from 10.30am to 12.30pm on 21 November and 19 December at the Wonthaggi Senior Citizen’s Club, and at the Grantville Transaction Centre from 10.30am to 12.00pm on 14 December.

Teens who are unable to attend these sessions are encouraged to see their local GP and organise the free vaccination before 31 December 2017.

These vaccinations are the result of a Victorian Government program, introduced to combat the recent rise in cases of deadly strains of meningococcal disease. There were 48 cases of the previously rare ‘W’ strain in 2016, up from just one in 2013.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, encouraged all Bass Coast teenagers to do their bit for the community, and for themselves, and ensure they’re vaccinated.

"Although uncommon, meningococcal disease can become life threatening very quickly," Cr Rothfield said.

"The more young people take up the offer to protect themselves with this vaccine, the more effectively we will be able to halt the spread of this very serious disease."

For more information on the free vaccination sessions, contact Bass Coast Shire Council Immunisation Officer on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or (03) 5671 2211. For health advice, call NURSE-ON-CALL on 1300 60 60 24.
