Are you an experienced artist interested in creating a contemporary public artwork for the township of Cape Paterson?

Each year, Bass Coast Shire Council commissions a new public art piece for the Shire and is now calling for expressions of interest (EOI) for the 2019/20 project. The commission has a budget of $45,000 and applications close on Sunday, 20 October.

The township that receives the artwork is determined by Council’s Sites and Themes Plan, which was developed in conjunction with the community. Recent projects include ‘Site Lines’ in Kilcunda, ‘Trax’ in Inverloch, ‘Excuse Me Mr Seagull’ in San Remo and ‘Collide’ in Kernot. These artworks have helped to energise and transform the local communities where they are located.

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari, said the aim of the commission is to find an artwork that will say something about the character and history of the town.

"We want the local community to embrace the artwork and for visitors to Cape Paterson to see it as an additional attraction for the area," Cr Tessari said.

"Public Art creates conversations and opens our imaginations. While not all people may love public art, it definitely creates discussion.

"We would love to see something that will spark people’s curiosity, something that really captures the character and culture of Cape Paterson."

Three locations have been identified by the community working group, made up of local artists and community representatives, as potential sites in Cape Paterson. Artists are encouraged to discuss their proposal with Council officers prior to submitting an EOI.

A site visit will be held for interested artists on Friday, 13 September from 12:30pm, starting at the Cape Paterson Community Hall, located at 565 Cape Paterson Road.

Interested artists can access more information, the EOI guidelines and application form on Council’s website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au/artistscall or by contacting Team Leader Arts and Culture on 1300 BCOAST (226 278) or (03) 5671 2414, or by emailing public.art@basscoast.vic.gov.au.

In 2018/19 Bass Coast Shire Council’s public art commission saw the artwork ‘Collide’ installed in Kernot.
