Help shape our Environmental Policy

Wellington Shire Council is keen to receive community feedback on its draft Environmental Policy – a significant document which will guide the Council in its promotion of ecologically sustainable development over the coming years.

By Wellington Shire Council - 19th April 2004 - Back to News

Victoria’s third largest Shire, Wellington contains some of the State’s most ecologically significant areas, including the internationally renowned Gippsland Lakes, the Wetlands, and Coastal and National Parks such as Tarra Bulga.

The aim of the Environmental Policy is to ensure a sustainable and liveable environment for residents and visitors alike, and it identifies a number of issues for action such as:

  • promoting conservation and the ecologically sustainable use of resources to reduce waste and minimise pollution;
  • improving the management, drainage and quality of water in the shire;
  • protecting and enhancing native vegetation;
  • promoting environmentally sustainable development within industries, including timber and agriculture;
  • protecting and improving the atmosphere and climate;
  • achieving economic development in an environmentally sustainable way;
  • promoting a high level of environmental awareness within local government.

Copies of the draft policy are available from the Council’s Sale, Yarram and Maffra service centres, and can also be found on its web site www.wellington.vic.gov.au

The deadline for submissions, which need to be made in writing, is 14 June.These can be posted to Colleen Murphy, Environmental Planner, Civic Centre, Port of Sale, PO Box 506, Sale, Vic 3850. Alternatively they can be sent by email to enquiries@wellington.vic.gov.au and should be marked ‘Environmental Policy’.

Anyone who would like more information can call Colleen Murphy on 1300 366 244.

Wellington Shire Council will consider the feedback received when finalising the Environmental Policy, which is due to be formally adopted later in the year.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "As a responsible Council we are committed to protecting and enhancing Wellington’s natural resources and recognise the importance of ensuring that environmental considerations form an integral part of all our decision making and planning processes. The success of this Environmental Policy needs commitment not just from the council but from the shire community as a whole, which is why we are keen for their feedback on this draft."
