Gippsland Water Factory set to deliver economic growth and jobs for region

Gippsland is set to receive a significant economic boost through the Gippsland Water Factory with around 300 new jobs and up to 100 opportunities for suppliers and contractors expected during the construction of phase one of project.

Around 45 new jobs have already been created in Gippsland, with this number set to increase during the project’s construction phases later this year.

The project received an overwhelming response at the Eastern Victoria Project and Opportunities Summit, recently held at Morwell. Over 280 key industry and government representatives attended the summit. Gippsland Water Factory representatives received over 120 enquiries at the summit from suppliers and contractors interested in being involved in the project.

The Gippsland Water Factory is an innovative wastewater treatment and recycling facility that will produce around 8 million litres of high quality recycled water each day for use by local industry, and solve the 50-year-old problem of untreated wastewater being discharged into the Regional Outfall Sewer.

The Gippsland Water Factory will be built at Maryvale, with construction to start in late 2006. Commissioning of the facility is expected by late 2008, with commercial handover to Gippsland Water expected by mid 2010.

"This project is a real winner for Gippsland as it will provide jobs, address the problems with the Regional Outfall Sewer, offer an alternative water supply for local industry and contribute to restoring our local waterways," David Evans, Chair of the Alliance Leadership Team said.

The project officially kicked-off in January when Gippsland Water engaged a project alliance comprised of world leaders and innovators in engineering, water recycling and environmental management to deliver the project.

The alliance, comprised of Transfield Services, CH2M Hill, Parsons Brinckerhoff and Gippsland Water will spend the next four months developing the design and construction components of the facility.

Suppliers and contractors have the opportunity to register their interest online through the recently launched Gippsland Water Factory website – www.gippslandwaterfactory.com.au.
