Tourism group seeking community membersBass Coast Shire Council is looking for community members interested in tourism on Phillip Island and in San Remo to be part of a Community Tourism Reference Group. By Portal Admin - 23rd January 2017 - Back to News Formation of the Group is one of the high priority actions from the Phillip Island and San Remo Visitor Economy Strategy 2035: Growing Tourism.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, said the Strategy was prepared to help ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of the tourism sector and recognises the importance of both the community and the natural environment in achieving this outcome.
"The delivery of a world leading destination experience, along with management of an important eco-system and tourism destination such as Phillip Island and San Remo, requires a network of partners working towards a common goal," Cr Rothfield said.
"The Group will ensure an open and productive relationship between Council, the tourism sector and community."
The Group will assist Council and its partners with the implementation of the Strategy in relation to:
Co-ordination of the Global Sustainable Tourism Criteria certification process for Phillip Island and San Remo
Preservation of beaches and natural beauty
Prevention of deterioration of its foreshore
Maintenance of wildlife reserves
Improvement of facilities that would lead to the better enjoyment of the Island by the people
Members will act as advocates for priorities of the Strategy, and increase networking and collaboration between key stakeholders in the tourism sector and the community.
Membership for up to six community representatives will be selected through an Expression of Interest process, and evaluated and selected by a panel in regards to the applicant’s abilities, experience, enthusiasm and commitment to the industry. Community members will be appointed for a two year term.
These six members will join representatives from Council, Destination Phillip Island, Phillip Island Conservation Society, Phillip Island Nature Parks, Phillip Island Tourism and Business Association, San Remo District Traders Association and San Remo Foreshore Committee.
The Group’s Terms of Reference and Expression of Interest forms are available online at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au/pitourism2035.
Interested applicants must submit their Expressions of Interest by 5.00pm on Friday, 17 February 2017.
