Thousands of community members came out to celebrate as the Bass Coast Baton Relay passed through 18 towns across the Shire on Sunday.

The event, staged by Bass Coast Shire Council as a warm up to the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games, was the biggest of its kind ever held in Bass Coast.

More than 200 local residents and organisations were nominated by fellow community members and over 500 individuals participated on the day.

The baton travelled to Wonthaggi, Archies Creek, Dalyston, Kilcunda, San Remo, Newhaven, Cowes, Rhyll, Bass, Coronet Bay, Corinella, Grantville, Pioneer Bay, Kernot, Krowera, Glen Alvie, Inverloch and Cape Paterson.

Council’s Arts and Leisure Coordinator and Relay organiser, Jenny Churchill, said it was one of the most fulfilling activities she had ever been involved in.

"Seeing the looks on the faces of the participants and their family and friends made every minute worth it. It was an emotional day for the whole Shire, I had a teary a few times," Jenny admitted.

The majority of towns held local celebrations including morning teas, barbeques, champagne breakfasts and performances by local music groups, with Grantville even hiring a jumping castle.

Jenny said Council and YMCA staff had received numerous thank you notes and phone calls and even a homemade sponge cake.

"The day meant so much to people. It’s not often that we get opportunities like this to recognise our community members and the work they do," said Jenny.

The baton itself was designed and made by local artist, Ian Smith, and was themed around the phrase From the Coast to the Hills. The magnificent piece incorporated wood from Coastal Banksia for the coast, Cypress representing the trees used as wind breaks by farmers, and Blackwood for the hills. It also contained a stunning stained glass window and a message from the Governor of Victoria, John Landy A.C. M.B.E.

Excerpt from Governor’s message:

"I cannot think of a more fitting way to recognise community achievement than to nominate deserving individuals and organisations who have served their community, to be runners for the shire-wide relay. This relay acknowledges your vital contributions and is truly a celebration of the Shire’s community spirit."
