Council Reminds Truck Drivers Of Parking Laws

Parking Rules For Truck Drivers

Parking Rules For Truck Drivers

Following a rise in complaints relating to trucks parking in residential streets, Latrobe City Council is urging truck drivers to refresh their knowledge and understanding of current road rules.

By Latrobe City - 17th October 2011 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s acting general manager community liveability, Casey Hepburn, said that safety and noise concerns had been raised.

"Our local laws team has received a number of complaints in recent weeks relating to trucks being parked in residential streets. There are a number of state-wide and local laws that relate to the parking of trucks in residential areas; as well as a duty of care by the driver to make sure the truck is parked safely, is visible and that noise disturbance is kept to a minimum," Ms Hepburn said.

The Victorian Road Safety Road Rules prohibits heavy or long vehicles, trucks over 4.5 tonnes (gross vehicle mass) or 7.5 metres in length from parking on roads in built-up areas for any longer than one hour.

In addition, unless illuminated by street lighting and visible to a distance of 200m in all directions, trucks over 2.2 metres in width must have clearance and side marker lights operating and clearly visible between sunset and sunrise.

Under the provisions of Council’s local law No 2, the parking of heavy vehicles (weighing more than 3 tonnes) is prohibited on residential properties without a permit. For all other private land, truck owners and/or the driver wishing to park on private property should check with Council’s planning team to ensure compliance with the planning scheme.

Ms Hepburn added that infringement notices of $73 are frequently issued for trucks parked illegally.

"The safety and comfort of residents is our top priority. We don’t wish to impede the business being carried out by truck drivers. We are simply asking for drivers to abide by the rules and to take responsibility for where they park their rig," Ms Hepburn concluded.
