Major Upgrades To Water Storages On Course For Summer Completion

Three major water storage upgrade projects benefiting East Gippsland Water customers in Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, Kalimna, Eagle Point, Paynesville, Newlands Arm and Raymond Island are all on course for completion this summer.

The initiatives, in total worth $6.8 million, are part of the Corporation’s commitment to ensure all customers have secure, consistently high quality drinking water supplies for the long term future.

An extensive $2.1 million upgrade to one of the two water storages at Wy Yung, primarily serving Bairnsdale, is about to enter its final stage. The basin, capable of holding 88 megalitres* of drinking water, has been lined with a geotextile material and 24,500 square metres of heavy duty polypropylene sheeting. A polypropylene cover will also be installed over the entire basin shortly and the storage is expected to go into full scale operation during November.

A $2 million revamp of the ageing Sunlakes open water storage serving Lakes Entrance and Kalimna commenced in July and is now at the half-way stage. Again the 43 megalitre basin is in the process of being relined, with installation of a cover over the storage to follow in the near future. The project is due to be completed in December, before the start of the busy Christmas holiday season, with the Sarsfield storage meeting the drinking water needs of residents in the meantime.

Finally, a $2.7 million initiative to replace the open water storage at Eagle Point with two large, six megalitre covered water storage tanks is also progressing. The first of the tanks, temporarily assembled adjacent to the open storage, is in full scale operation. The open water storage itself has been taken out of service permanently and work is underway to construct a special platform along its floor, onto which this first tank will be relocated, with the second tank to be installed alongside. It is anticipated that the whole project will be completed by the end of 2008, benefiting customers at Eagle Point, Paynesville, Newlands Arm and Raymond Island.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Managing Director, Les Mathieson: "These significant projects are part of a mammoth $45 million package of works being implemented to ensure the long term security and quality of drinking water supplies for 17,000 customers reliant of the Mitchell River Water Supply System.

"The initiatives are being driven by the need to protect against the potential impact of climate change and extreme weather events, and to address the drinking water needs of a growing population in the region.

"Every effort has been made to minimise any inconvenience to residents and we greatly appreciate their cooperation."

As part of its major package of works, East Gippsland water is also set to commence a construction program worth some $26 million, comprising a new reservoir and water treatment plant at Woodglen near Bairnsdale.
