Council meeting venue to be centralised

Future meetings of Latrobe City Council are to be held under the one roof, at the Latrobe City corporate headquarters.

By Latrobe City Council - 23rd February 2006 - Back to News

The decision made at Monday’s council meeting ends more than eight years of council meetings held on a rotational basis at different venues around the municipality.

Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said the centrality of meetings at the corporate headquarters will provide more equitable access for residents across the municipality. "For regular council meeting attendees, whether they live in Traralgon, Moe, Churchill, Toongabbie, or Boolarra, there will be approximately the same or less overall travelling time and expense involved. From a number of localities there are in fact significant savings to be made," Mr Buckley explained.

"From the corporate perspective, there will also be savings in setting up council meetings at varying venues; and officers who have to provide information that may be required during a council meeting will have closer proximity to their files."

Mr Buckley said the initial decision to rotate venues was made at a time when there was no council headquarters and administration was spread across the municipality.

"Following the election of the first democratically elected council in March 1997, council meetings were all initially held in Traralgon. In September that year council decided to rotate the venues where meetings would be held, between Traralgon, Moe, Morwell and Churchill. Given that council now has a centrally located dedicated headquarters, much of the rationale for rotating venues no longer exists.

"Since that time an emphasis on council engagement with the community has also been developed through the community engagement strategy. As a result there are now small township meetings and commercial forums, providing communities across the municipality additional opportunities other than council meetings to input into council decision making without the need to travel from their home community," Mr Buckley said.

"One central location for future council meetings will also avoid the current confusion on venues that at times exists, particularly for residents who only attend an occasional council meeting. They can now be confident of the meeting venue," Mr Buckley added.

Council meetings will be centralised from the first ordinary meeting of council on Monday 6 March 2006.
