Green Light For Glengarry Skate Park From Council

Latrobe City Council adopted its Skate BMX Plan 2009 at Monday night’s council meeting, paving the way for development of a skate park facility at Glengarry.

Latrobe City deputy mayor, Cr Kellie O Callaghan said the local level skate park will be developed in Glengarry utilising some of the steel components remaining from the recent Churchill skate park redevelopment.

"The Glengarry SK8 Ripper Crew has been actively seeking the development of a skate facility in Glengarry for many years. The Skate Ripper Crew has ensured that there was significant support from within the local community in particular the selection of an appropriate site for the park to be developed.

"The ongoing commitment of the SK8 Ripper Crew has been recognised by Council through allocation of $60,000 plus surplus ramps towards the development of a Glengarry skate facility. Council will now work closely with community representatives to deliver this exciting project," Cr O’Callaghan said.

Latrobe City Mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said that while much attention had been focused on the Glengarry facility, as a result of adopting the plan on Monday there will be some immediate action in terms of facility development and improvements across the municipality.

"This plan provides guidance on the future development and operation of skate and BMX facilities across the municipality," Cr Price said.

"The adopted plan also highlights the future development of a local level facility in Yallourn North. Once again due to the demonstrated support from the community and the availability of a suitable site council will consider the allocation of a further $60,000 plus remaining steel ramps from Churchill in the 2009/10 budget, towards the development of a local skate facility in Yallourn North.

"Along with the proposed development of local level facilities the plan also identified the need for immediate funding to address safety and amenity issues at existing facilities. These funds will be used to ensure existing facilities are safe and provide auxiliary facilities at the parks such as shade, bins and seating."

Cr Price said that since the draft plan was released for community consultation in March over thirty submissions were received from individuals and groups interested in developing or improving skate and BMX facilities within their communities.

"These submissions ranged from letters of support for the development of local level facilities to submissions providing detailed drawing for potential facilities.

"Council would like to thank all those who provided submissions and helped develop the plan which will result in increased recreational opportunities for many young people across our municipality," Cr Price said.
