Have Your Say On Council’S Waste Management Strategy

Latrobe City Council will be holding two community information sessions on its draft Waste Management Strategy following Council’s decision at Monday night’s meeting to release the draft strategy for public comment.

By Latrobe City - 23rd September 2010 - Back to News

The information sessions will be held at the corporate headquarters in Morwell on Wednesday 13 October from 2pm to 3pm and again from 6pm to 7pm. The draft strategy, which focuses on waste education and helping increase recycling in a bid to divert waste from landfill, will also be open for community consultation, until Tuesday 19 October 2010.

Latrobe City’s mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said that the waste management strategy aims to comply with the State government’s ‘Towards Zero Waste’ policy.

"The future direction of waste management in Latrobe City needs to be consistent and work towards that of the Gippsland region and of Victoria as a whole. This draft strategy acknowledges changes in philosophy towards waste, including alternative waste technologies and a strong push to divert waste from landfill.

"Currently, Council provides 97.5% of households with a kerbside garbage collection service, including household recycling and green waste collection. Many people have already embraced recycling, but there is still a long way to go to achieve our target of 64% recycling of municipal waste," Cr O’Callaghan said.

"This strategy provides a framework for the management of a wide variety of waste materials and waste services over the next seven years. We are looking at delivering industry best practice for waste management and we want to remain open and flexible to alternative waste treatment technologies.

"The draft strategy considers improved data collection and operations at transfer stations and the need to work more closely with the commercial and industrial sector as well as looking into public place recycling.

"The draft strategy focuses on continuous improvement and how we, as a community, and Latrobe City, as a municipality, deal with our waste material. We look forward to receiving comments and feedback on the draft strategy. It’s important that the community has their say on this issue," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.

Latrobe City’s draft Waste Management Strategy will be open for community comment until Tuesday 19 October 2010. Copies of the draft strategy will be available for viewing at all service centres and online at www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.

Submissions should be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Latrobe City Council, PO Box 264, Morwell, 3840.

Council will meet to consider any written submissions in relation to the draft Waste Management Strategy at a meeting of Council to be held at 7pm on Monday 6 December, 2010 in the Nambur Wariga meeting room, at the corporate headquarters in Morwell.

All submissions will be considered public documents unless specified otherwise by the submitter.

Any person requiring further information concerning the draft Waste Management Strategy, or the making of a written submission for the Council meeting should contact Ms Deirdre Griepsma, Manager Natural Environment Sustainability, telephone 5128 5735.
