New Shelter For Red Rocks BBQ

Bass Coast Shire Council has installed a new BBQ shelter at the Red Rocks Picnic area on Phillip Island

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 7th May 2009 - Back to News

Council’s Environment Manager, Paul Smith, said the new timber shelter covered the existing BBQ in the Phillip Island Foreshore Reserve at the northern end of Red Rocks Road.

"The new shelter will protect BBQ users from the elements, so it can be used year round," said Mr Smith.

"The Red Rocks area already has some good community facilities including car parking, toilets, picnic facilities and good pedestrian beach access. Adding the BBQ shelter means the reserve can be used even more often.

"The shelter also lowers the maintenance requirements of the BBQ and increases its lifespan," said Mr Smith.

Council is working in partnership with the Phillip Island Conservation Society to develop the interpretive signage around the shelter.

"The signage will illustrate the important conservation and recreational values of the coastline in the Red Rocks area. This includes the works carried out by the Society to help raise public awareness of the important natural values of the coastal area," explained Mr Smith.

The Red Rocks foreshore area has been a popular visitor destination since the late 1880s. The new shelter and signage will provide even more reasons for visitors to continue to visit this beautiful spot now and in the future.
