Training wall upgrades

Works to be undertaken include stabilisation of the core by replacing existing core rock with rock-filled geotextile bags and the replenishment of armour rock along the channel sides on both the eastern and western walls. The project is estimated to take approximately 4 months to complete.

Paul Volk Contracting P/L will be carrying out the works on behalf of Gippsland Ports. Throughout the project, machinery and materials will be transported via barge from Bullock Island Wharf to foreshore locations (i) approximately 50m east of Barrier Landing Jetty and (ii) approximately 200m west of Flagstaff Jetty.

Materials will be further transported from the landing sites to each training wall using land-based construction equipment. Both routes will utilize existing vehicle access tracks over and along the foreshore areas on both sides of the entrance.

Construction safety notice

Pedestrian access tracks and foreshore areas adjacent to each training wall will be closed and fenced off with signage for the duration of the construction activities - large earthmoving machinery will be moving around the area.

Paul Volk Contracting P/L will be operating barges and tugs in the delivery of the works, transiting from Bullock Island across Cunninghame Arm and along Hopetoun Channel. The beaching of recreational vessels near the landing and construction sites is not permitted while tug and barge operations are occurring.

The Victorian Government, under the State Budget 2024-25, committed funding to undertake priority renewal works, which will ensure continued access to and from the Gippsland Lakes for commercial fishers, commercial vessels and tourism businesses.
