Gippsland Water has formally delayed submission of the works approval to EPA for Stage three of the Soil and Organic Recycling Facility.

Gippsland Water had initially announced that this application would be submitted to EPA by November. The application has been delayed due to the collection of further information required to be submitted in the works approval application.

The works approval application for Stage three of the Soil and Organic Recycling Facility is expected to be submitted to EPA early in January.

Gippsland Water in conjunction with its technology partner Collex, have been reviewing the information prepared to ensure that stakeholders and community have access to the details of the environmental controls and the technologies proposed for the facility.

Stage Three of the Soil and Organic Recycling Facility proposes to use two advanced treatment technologies to remove persistent contaminants from soils such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). These soils are proposed to be treated using two treatment processes: indirect thermal desorption and solvent extraction. These technologies are to be brought in to the facility especially for this purpose, and then removed after the treatment process is complete.

Gippsland Water, Chief Executive Officer, John Mitchell said "Gippsland Water is committed to keeping the community informed of the status of this project.

Gippsland Water in conjunction with its technology partner, Collex, will be undertaking a range of activities early in 2006, to ensure that those who have an interest in this project can meet employees and discuss any aspects of the soil and organic recycling facility."

EPA Regional Manager, David Mackenzie said "There has been community interest in the previous stages of this project and we anticipate that this interest will continue for stage three."

"EPA will advertise the works approval application once it has been accepted. This will then allow the community and stakeholders 21 days to respond to the application and we welcome this input."
