Have Your Say On Gippsland’S Water Future

East Gippsland Water is encouraging customers to have their say on proposals intended to ensure the security of Gippsland’s water resources for the next 50 years.

By East Gippslsnd Water - 17th September 2010 - Back to News

Despite recent good rainfall and the wettest winter for many years, the long term outlook for the region indicates increasing pressure on depleting water resources due to climate change, drought, land use changes and population growth.

The Victorian Government’s recently released draft water strategy - the Gippsland Region Sustainable Water Strategy – proposes tighter management across the region’s river systems and aquifers to balance the needs of water users and the environment with future water availability.

Development of this draft was guided by a Consultative Committee with representatives from local water corporations including East Gippsland Water, catchment management authorities, coastal management, the environmental and farming sectors, local government and industry.

Proposals to address the effects of reduced water availability include:

· protecting the Gippsland Lakes by capping how much water can be extracted from rivers feeding lakes;

· exploring innovative ways to increase the reliability of water resources, such as East Gippsland Water’s use of an aquifer as a massive, secure underground storage for drinking water.

The Government is seeking responses to the draft strategy, with the final Gippsland Region Sustainable Water Strategy expected to be released in mid 2011. The draft is available online at www.ourwater.vic.gov.au/programs/sws/gippsland. Printed copies will be available from East Gippsland Water’s head office at 133 Macleod Street, Bairnsdale from Monday 20 September and the deadline for submissions is 3 December 2010.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Acting Managing Director Brett Millington: "This is an important opportunity for stakeholders, not least our customers, to have their say on how we ensure water resources are protected for future generations, and that East Gippsland communities and the local economy continue to thrive."

The draft strategy is also being presented at a number of regional forums, including in Bairnsdale on Monday 20 September and Orbost on Tuesday 21 September. Those interested in attending should phone 5150 3567 or 136 186 in advance.
