Representatives from Latrobe City Council and Latrobe City Youth Council recently gathered in the Function Room at Council’s Traralgon Office to celebrate International Youth Day.

The Youth Day event was facilitated by Karen Bowker, Principal of Gormandale Primary School, and opened officially with a performance by talented local singer Lee Tomholt.

During the evening Latrobe City Youth Council made proposals to establish a ‘Buddy System’ between younger and older people in the community and also suggested holding an annual event aimed at Latrobe’s isolated older residents that is hosted by young people in the region.

Group discussions on new family forms and participation in an ageing society also took place, and strategies to strengthen and develop these areas in the future were also considered by the groups.

Latrobe City Youth Services Officer, Tanya Harrington, explained that developing positive relationships between older and younger people can assist in breaking down stereotypes and enhancing communication between generations.

"The theme for International Youth Day 2004 was ‘Youth in an Intergenerational Society’. It aimed to highlight the importance of solidarity between different generations in families, communities and nations. Globally, today’s society is the youngest it ever has been, with almost fifty percent of the world’s population aged 25 years or under. It is estimated that by the year 2050 the population of people older than 65 will have almost quadrupled, whilst the proportion of children will have declined by a third. By the middle of this century, the old and young will represent an equal share of the world’s population," Ms Harrington said.

"Latrobe City Council and the community’s young people made a commitment at the Youth Day event to build and maintain strong levels of communication. Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley; Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White; and Youth Council Representative, Marley Hornstra, signed a Memorandum of Commitment to International Youth Day. From now on, Latrobe City will endeavour to celebrate the theme of International Youth Day each year, working with the Youth Council to build stronger relationships between its younger and older residents," Ms Harrington concluded.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the needs of the community will continue to be addressed and met if all generations in the region work together towards common goals.

"For Latrobe to continue to grow and develop, everyone in the community needs to understand what older and younger citizens require and want from the region, now and in the future," Cr White said.

"Youth Day helps to increase communication between all generations, and as was demonstrated at this year’s event, it provides a good opportunity to discuss what plans can be put into action in the future that will make Latrobe an even better place for residents to live," Cr White added.
