Joe Tabuteau Reserve Not For Sale

Latrobe City Council’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, today said that rumours circulating which suggest that council is planning to sell the Joe Tabuteau Reserve were nothing more than irresponsible scaremongering.

By Latrobe City - 24th October 2008 - Back to News

"The Moe community can be assured that council has no plans to sell the Joe Tabuteau Reserve," Mr Buckley said.

"Any rumours, gossip or stories to the contrary are pure fiction.

"While it is generally not the business of council to respond to community gossip, we felt that in light of the momentum that this rumour has gained, we have no choice but to speak out and allay community fears."

Mr Buckley said that he was disappointed by recent events.

"This type of damaging gossip shows a reckless indifference to the community of Moe.

"It serves no purpose other than to attempt to undermine the considerable energy which has been invested by community stakeholders in building a positive and productive relationship with council.

"Council at this time seeks to reaffirm its commitment to the interests of the current operators of existing clubs and organisations on the reserve."

Mr Buckley said that council had previously been contacted by the Moe Racing Club who had expressed an interest in purchasing the reserve, however this offer was not formally considered.

"Council does not own the Joe Tabuteau Reserve, it is crown land and as such, not ours to sell.

"Council manages the reserve by way of a committee of management which has a perpetual agreement.

"Our role is to manage the reserve, facilitate community access and secure public use of open space," Mr Buckley said.

"It has also been suggested that council is planning to sell the Moe Bowling Club. The Moe Bowling Club in fact owns its property, which demonstrates that those circulating these rumours have no understanding of the facts.

"Any changes to the current appointment of council as the committee of management for the entire reserve would require the support of the Department of Sustainability and Environment.

"The Moe Racing Club has been advised that council would be unlikely to support any changes to the current arrangements at the reserve that would have a negative impact on community access."
