Seeking community feedback on cycle path strategy

Wellington Shire Council is keen to receive feedback from the local community on its draft strategy to maintain, upgrade and extend its network of cycle routes and shared cycle paths in towns.

By Wellington Shire Council - 13th August 2004 - Back to News

The council’s Shared Path & On-Road Bicycle Network Plan is designed to guide the development of Wellington’s cycle and shared path network over the next ten years. Its aim is to encourage more people to take regular exercise by making it even easier for them to access such facilities, in the knowledge that they are both pleasant and safe to use. Those to be targeted include commuters and school students, along with recreational and other users.

Wellington already has a network of some 14 kms of on-road cycle lanes, complemented by nearly 17 kms of off-road shared cycle paths - for use by both cyclists and walkers. In addition, the council recently announced its success in obtaining $79,000 of funding from State Government under its Traffif & Road Use Management Program to extend the existing 10 kms of shared cycle path around Sale by a further 0.5 Kms.

Ideas raised in the draft strategy to build on these foundations include:

· making sure that cycle lanes and shared cycle paths are maintained to a good standard – free from obstructions, badly designed grates and potholes;

· creating a user-friendly environment for cyclists and walkers, through good urban design and appropriate traffic management measures;

· installing highly visible, well lit cycle racks close to key facilities and preferably under shelter;

· ensuring on-road cycle lanes are clearly marked and visible to motorists to maximise road safety.

Copies of the draft are available from the shire’s libraries, as well as the council’s Yarram and Sale service centres. It can also be viewed on the council’s website www.wellington.vic.gov.au where it is flagged on the home page.

Wednesday 1 September is the deadline for feedback and this should be submitted in writing to Tim Rowe, Manager Open Space, Wellington Shire Council, Port of Sale Civic Centre, 70 Foster Street, Sale, Vic 3850. Alternatively he can be emailed at timr@wellington.vic.gov.au

Said Wellington’s Mayor Jeff Amos: "As a council we recognise the importance of providing a well maintained and safe network of shared paths and cycle routes, that will encourage more people to exercise and pursue a healthy lifestyle. With this in mind we are keen to receive feedback on this draft strategy from the community, to ensure that we progress in the most effective way to address their needs."

A final version of the strategy, taking into account submissions received, is expected to be adopted by the council by the end of the year.
