East Gippsland proudly celebrates it’s tradition of compassion, harmony and diversity

The East Gippsland region and its people have always been renowned for their inclusive, tolerant and compassionate spirit, and the generosity that is shown towards newcomers, and the community generally.

By East Gippsland Multicultural Support Group - 30th March 2006 - Back to News

The EGMSG aims to help continue this wonderful history of goodwill, and is committed to working with and leading the East Gippsland community to become an even better vibrant, proud, caring and cohesive society.

The first plans for a support group to assist migrants living or working in East Gippsland, began over some 25 years ago. It took a lot of time, hard work and effort, but it all eventually came to fruition, and they haven't looked back. From those very humble beginnings, the 'Bairnsdale International Women's Group' or BIWG for short, was then 'brought to life' in 1989, and has grown ever since.

It all started from an idea of East Gippsland identity Mina Armstrong, who saw a need for the creation of a regional community organisation, whose primary aims were to look after the support, welfare and general improvement of the lives of migrant women and their families, who lived or worked in the East Gippsland region. But as with life, in our ever changing world, the history of the organisation has now come full circle.

In March 2006, the group decided to 'keep pace with the times' and officially changed it's name, constitution, ideas and much more, and has also opted for a fresh and positive new look. The group is eager to work together with all people in our community; to foster greater diversity, friendship, harmony and respect, and is welcoming everyone to join them. The 'new' EGMSG is now looking towards the future with an immense spirit of enthusiasm and optimism. So will you join us ?:

in 'Leading the East Gippsland community, to become an even better vibrant, proud, caring and cohesive society'. I would now like to take this opportunity, to invite you to the official launch of the East Gippsland Multicultural Support Group, Inc., and to join us after the launch for a delicious afternoon tea.

The EGMSG gratefully appreciates the generous support and assistance of the East Gippsland Shire Council, Gippsland Multicultural Services Inc., the Victorian Multicultural Commission and the fantastic citizens of the East Gippsland community. I, and on behalf of the members of the EGMSG, welcome you to join us and celebrate this historic occasion, and support us in our endeavours to create an even more tolerant, diverse and harmonious East Gippsland.
