Waste Management Strategy Adopted

Latrobe City Council adopted the Waste Management Strategy at the Council meeting held on Monday 6 December.

By Latrobe City - 8th December 2010 - Back to News

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrell White, said that the adoption of the strategy means Latrobe City is well aligned with the State government’s ‘Towards Zero Waste’ policy targets.

"The future direction of waste management in Latrobe City needs to be consistent and work towards that of the Gippsland region and of Victoria as a whole. This strategy acknowledges changes in philosophy towards waste, including alternative waste technologies and a strong push to divert waste from landfill.

"Currently, Council provides 97.5 per cent of households with a kerbside garbage collection service, including household recycling and green waste collection. Many people have already embraced recycling, but there is still a long way to go to achieve our target of 64 per cent recycling of municipal waste," Cr White said.

"This strategy provides a framework for the management of a wide variety of waste materials and waste services over the next seven years. We are looking at delivering industry best practice for waste management and we want to remain open and flexible to alternative waste treatment technologies," Cr White concluded.
