Harmony Bells by Dr Anton Hasell returns to Berninneit in Bass Coast from 3 to 5 June 2024
Bass Coast Shire Council announces the return of Harmony Bells by Dr. Anton Hasell. Recovered in 2021, the reimagined sculptures will be reinstalled in Berninneit from June 3-5.
Bass Coast Shire Council is pleased to announce the triumphant return of the iconic Harmony Bells, a captivating artwork by internationally renowned artist Dr Anton Hasell. Originally installed in 2012 at the Phillip Island Cultural Centre, these unique sculptures were unfortunately stolen, only to be miraculously recovered from a ship in 2021, where they were destined for scrap metal.
Anton Hasell, a Central Victoria sculptor, blends traditional and digital tools for bells, interactive installations, sculptures, and prints. He's renowned for Melbourne's Federation Bells Carillon and public artworks in Australia, New Zealand, and the USA
Bells reimagined, celebrated
While not all the bells were found, the recovered pieces have been reimagined and revitalised by Dr Hasell himself. The new sculptures - infused with resilience and renewal, will soon find their home atop reinforced concrete and steel poles from June 3rd to 5th at Berninneit. This installation marks not just the restoration of a beloved artwork but also a celebration of its enduring spirit.
"We are thrilled to witness the re-envisioning of Harmony Bells," said Mayor, Cr Clare Le Serve, emphasising the community's delight in welcoming back this symbol of artistic innovation and cultural significance.
The decision to install the bells at Berninneit aligns with their original intended space at Phillip Island Cultural Centre, ensuring that their presence harmonises seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
Artistic legacy preserved
Each bell, weighing approximately 100 kilograms, carries a legacy of artistic excellence and meaningful connection to the community. The refurbishment costs have been covered by insurance, underscoring the commitment to preserving and promoting art in our region.
Dr Anton Hasell, whose international acclaim speaks volumes said he is looking forward to finalising this reimagined work and looks forward to the community coming together again to experience the harmonious blend of artistry and resilience embodied in Harmony Bells.
