Gippsland Gets Creative In May

This May in Gippsland will see a feast of over 100 arts events and activities as part of the forth Creative Gippsland Arts Festival.

By Bass Coast - 23rd April 2012 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Community and Economic Development Director, Steven Piasente, said Council is pleased to be one of six councils supporting this event.

"The festival is a great time to visit local arts venues and experience work by local artists.

"Our creative community is a drawcard for the region and another reason people visit Bass Coast. Many people then stay to enjoy the whole tourist experience," said Mr Piasente.

"We have some very talented people in the region and this festival highlights them and their individuality. In Bass Coast there will be a variety of exhibitions, workshops, dance, vocal noshes, readings, performances and much more.

"The program also has opportunities for you to to get involved and bring out your own creative side. I encourage you to look through the program for a chance to sing, hula hoop or Raku," Mr Piasente said.

This year the festival theme is E-motion and artists have taken up the challenge with the following activities. 12 goldsmiths have been working on the theme and will show their work at Goldsmiths Gallery in San Remo in an exhibition called Emotive Jewellery.
Regional sculptors will show their ‘Emotional Response’ in an exhibition of works in the gardens and terraces of Archies on the Creek.

Visit the Anglican Hall in Cowes at the end of May and be inspired by paintings, drawings, textiles, and sculptural art on themes that express the spiritual in daily life.

Christine Shaw’s Textiles Inspiration Exhibition is inspired by the emotions in everyday life, and is at Archies on the Creek.
Be part of an exciting collaboration in progress, called Maris Motu. Sculptor Jordan Crugnale, musician Mark Finsterer and dancer

Nancy Sposato come together in a performance inspired by what the tide washes up onto the shore.

Let your emotions go with a sing and a meal at Mitchell House in a session of Vocal Nosh.

The Bass Coast Artist’s Society members have been watching their own emotions and will show their self portraits in an exhibition called Self Portrait and all its Flaws.

You can also get very hands on! There is a Raku ceramics workshop at the Rescue Station Arts Co-op with Judith Roberts and the Bass Coast Artist Society is offering an open house day so you can ‘play’ with all sorts of art mediums.

The stars of Finucane and Smith’s Caravan Burlesque are offering workshops in hula hooping, improvisation, Bollywood dancing and Dance Jam.

The big drawcard is Finucane and Smith’s Caravan Burlesque. It is a salon of international stars that have the critics raving; they will be touring around Gippsland and stopping in Bass at the Bass and District Sports Club on 19 and 20 May.
