The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, said today that he will support legislation to extend the moratorium for a further four years on the establishment of broad acre trials for genetically modified (GM) crops.

"Although I personally support the use and development of bio technology, and after personally researching the issue in detail, I believe that there are significant benefits for the state and our farming community with the careful and safe use of GMOs," Mr Ingram said.

"Both the public and our international markets have to have confidence in the technology and the business behind it which is not the case at the moment."

Mr Ingram said that the companies involved in the production of GM canola had not demonstrated an interest in convincing the public on the merits of these products to the community.

"The issue was highlighted in responses to my electorate survey where 70% of respondents did not believe that they had enough information to make an informed decision on GMOs," Mr Ingram said.

"Only 9% of respondents indicated they would support the use of GMOs

"The State Government, farmers and the scientific community have the next four years to demonstrate the benefits and convince the public, concerned farmers and our markets that the GMO technology is a necessary and safe technology, which is in the best interest of the state," Mr Ingram concluded.
