Warning – Look Out For Stock On Roads!

Wellington Shire Council is urging motorists to be extra vigilant when driving, particularly at night, because of the risk of farm stock straying onto roads in search of food.

By Wellington Shire Council - 5th May 2004 - Back to News

In spite of the recent rain there have been an increasing number of incidents reported to the council of cattle and sheep grazing close to the roadside and breaking through fencing as they look for better vegetation. Some have ended up walking into the path of traffic.

Anyone seeing farm stock loose by the roadside is asked to ring Wellington Shire on 1300 366 244, or the police on 000, so that immediate action can be taken to move the animals to somewhere secure.

Farmers are also urged to check their boundary fences to ensure they are stock-proof.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "We strongly advise motorists to be extra alert when driving on the Shire’s roads, whether during the day or at night. Keeping a lookout for any animal movement close to the road and driving at a sensible speed may just help prevent a nasty accident."

"In the interests of safety we would very much appreciate motorists informing us immediately of any stock found on roads so that we can take appropriate action.

"Please also keep a look out for the possible presence of council staff or the police as they attempt to remove stray stock. An indicator of this will be vehicles by the side of the road with flashing lights."
