PS Curlip, which was launched yesterday.

"The impending commissioning of PS Curlip and official launching celebration in November 28 will be a truly great day for East Gippsland," Mr Ingram said.

"The project is the first major new tourism experience for our region and is an exciting opportunity to further the nature-based tourism experience and profile of East Gippsland.

"East Gippsland has abundant natural assets and spectacular nature-based tourism opportunities, but we have a limited number of marketable and identifiable tourism experiences.

"Projects like the Curlip are an important step in developing the critical mass of opportunities and activities for visitors to our region.

"I have been fortunate to play a small part in assisting the hard working Curlip committee in securing funding and refining the business case and have regularly visited the Butter Factory to inspect the building progress.

"Having a working paddle steamer again plying her trade on the Snowy River estuary will put the Orbost district firmly on the tourism map.

"Further opportunities which should come on line in the near future are essential regional projects that will start the real transformation of this region to identifiable tourism destination for more visitors. These include the icon walks project, which has been endorsed by the State Government in its nature-based tourism strategy; Bastion Point boat ramp (pending the outcome of the independent panel); and the soon to be constructed Tulloch Ard Gorge walk.

"The Curlip is a great community project and I am sure will turn into a valuable and important community asset," Mr Ingram concluded.
