The draft plan was released for public comment in February and submissions were received from the community during a 6 week consultation period.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Darrel White, said that the feedback from the community and key industry stakeholders was extremely supportive of the plan and the final plan reflected the few submissions received.

"The Latrobe City International Relations Committee, key industry stakeholders and members of the community were widely consulted and played a significant role in the development of the plan. Its primary focus is to ensure Latrobe City’s ongoing commitment to international exchanges and cooperation is maintained and developed, particularly in the fields of economy, trade, science and technology, culture, education, sports, health and people

"It was important that we captured as much feedback as possible to ensure that the plan places Latrobe City in the best possible position to take advantage of and expand upon our already well-developed international relations program," Cr White said.

Councillor Lisa Price, Chair of Latrobe City’s International Relations Committee said the Plan aims to achieve 8 key objectives. Included in these objectives is the promotion of Latrobe City as an international investment location and as a destination for international students, both of which bring significant economic benefits to our city.

"The plan certainly places Latrobe City in a great position to further capitalise on our programs and relationships. Like the relationships with our sister cities, which allow communities to exchange experiences and ideas, gain an international perspective and increase their understanding of global issues.

"Our active sister cities relationships also have an important role to play in developing international partnerships, they lead to economic growth, increased tourism, reliable business contacts and many other opportunities and benefits," Cr Price said.

"One of the major initiatives planned for 2011/12 (subject to being funded in the 2011/12 Latrobe City Council budget) will see young residents of Latrobe City involved in a Sports Exchange Program to each of our sister cities. This is a wonderful opportunity for cultural exchange and past participants have described the experience as life changing.

"I look forward to seeing new and exciting international relations opportunities like the Sports Exchange Program arise over the duration of the new plan," Cr White concluded.
