Bike Ride Through Gippsland In September

The Cycle against the Nuclear Cycle protest group of bicyclists will be riding through Gippsland during September

By Irregular Gippsland Peace Newsletter - 2nd August 2007 - Back to News

The cyclists protesting against nuclear power have been visiting many of the proposed sites for reactors. They began their journey in Rockhampton some time ago and when completed in Port Augusta will have travelled 4500ks.

They will be travelling through Gippsland in September.

Their approximate itinerary is as follows Sept. 8-10 Bombala - Cann River:

Sept. 11-12 Cann River - Orbost; Sept. 13 Orbost - Lakes Entrance: Sept. 15 Lakes Entrance to Bairnsdale; Sept. 16 Bairnsdale - Sale; Sept 18 Sale to Yarram; Sept 21 Yarram - Foster; Sept. 23 Foster - Korumburra; Sept. 25 Korumburra - Kooweerup; Sept. 28 Kooweerup to Hastings; Sept. 30 Hastings to Melbourne.

It is a pity the ride does not pass through Wonthaggi and Kilcunda - site of the desalination plant - and possible future nuclear reactor site. Aside from this site other sites mentioned from various sources include Hastings, French Island, Western Port Bay, Toora, Yarram, Seaspray, Dutson Downs and the Latrobe Valley .

The group are happy to speak to schools and public meetings and welcome local riders joining them.

Our primary concern is the close link between the nuclear power production and nuclear weapons. The CANC cyclists protest may help resuscitate the old Śnuclear free zonesą campaign by most Gippsland peace groups in the 1980s.
