Walking school bus expanding to more schools

Latrobe City Council has high hopes for a safe and healthy new school year, with the introduction of Walking School Bus projects for three more schools in the municipality.

By Latrobe City Council - 4th February 2004 - Back to News

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Graeme Middlemiss, said that following the successful launch of the project at Churchill Primary School in November last year, other schools had made preparations to launch their own routes this term.

"Elizabeth Street Primary School Moe, is ready to launch their Walking School Bus on 20 February, Grey Street Primary School, Traralgon will start theirs on 25 February and Churchill Primary’s second bus will start on 27 February. Stockdale Road Primary in Traralgon will be ready to take to the streets in March," Cr Middlemiss said.

"Council has been pleased with the enthusiastic response to a project that has potential benefits for all involved. Parents, who currently drive or walk students to school daily, have an opportunity to share the task with other parents. Children will be adopting a fun fitness routine, which will see them arrive at school alert and ready for the day’s activities and there will be less congestion in the school area," Cr Middlemiss explained.

Latrobe City’s Walking School Bus Project Officer, Elizabeth Tomlins urged parents and other members of the community to sign up as volunteers to help make the Walking School Bus project more efficient.

"The more volunteers there are, the less often each volunteer is required to walk. Volunteers can choose to walk daily, weekly, fortnightly or as often as they are available. You don’t have to be a parent to volunteer, just be interested in getting fitter, helping your community and making new friends," Ms Tomlins said.

For information on signing up to be a volunteer for the Walking School Bus project please contact Elizabeth Tomlins on 5128 5621.

The start of the new term has also highlighted parking issues outside or near to school gates. Cr Middlemiss reminded parents or guardians of their responsibility to park legally and safely.

"Parking, or pulling in even for the briefest period, too close to school crossings, or double parking in busy streets just to get closer to the school gates, is not only illegal but endangers the lives children. There are on the spot fines that Council’s local laws officers will issue if drivers are caught parking illegally. We would urge parents to park sensibly, legally and if necessary further away from the school, and walk with their children to the gates," Cr Middlemiss said.

"Latrobe City Council hopes that this new school term is the beginning of a safe, healthy and happy year for all schoolchildren in the municipality," Cr Middlemiss concluded.
