Council Opens Environmental Grants Program

Private landholders who have native vegetation or wetlands areas may qualify for a subsidy from Wellington Shire Council for vegetation protection and improvement works.

By Wellington Shire Council - 9th October 2006 - Back to News

Wellington Shire Council is calling for Expressions of Interest from landholders wanting to take advantage of the subsidies.

"Council’s Native Vegetation Protection Program is designed to assist landholders in protecting and improving our environment," said Steven Dickson, Director Community and Development Wellington Shire Council.

Projects that may be funded include fencing to protect natural areas from stock, pest and weeds control and some revegetation projects where they enhance natural areas.

Applications will be considered on a case by case basis, generally up to $5000, depending on the scale of the project and the benefits it will provide.

"Healthy and sustainable vegetation is a really important feature of our shire. Protecting our native vegetation and wetlands helps to protect water quality and river health, provide habitat for wildlife, maintain diversity of flora, prevent erosion and reduce the greenhouse effect," said Mr Dickson

Kath and Greg McEntee of Gormandale received a subsidy last year to fence out stock from their 15 acre remnant of Lowland Forest.

"Since moving to the property in 1978 we have been noticing a gradual loss of vegetation in our area. A lot of tree clearing has taken place," said Mrs McEntree.

"It made us realise how important it is for wildlife to be able to move across the landscape through remnant patches of habitat.

"It is amazing the diversity of flora just in our small patch.

"We didn’t want that to be lost," said Mrs McEntee.

"When we found we may be eligible for assistance through Council’s Native Vegetation Protection Program, it motivated us to get the fencing done," said Mrs McEntee.

Expressions of Interest are open until November 30, 2006.
