Renewed calls to improve the Promontory Road ahead of tourist season by Danny O'Brien
The Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O'Brien is renewing calls for the state government to improve the main road leading to our iconic tourism destination, Wilsons Promontory National Park.
Mr O'Brien said that as the holiday season swings into gear and warmer weather approaches, the Meeniyan-Promontory Road and Foster-Promontory Road are in very poor condition and a real let down for the region that boasts one of Australia's greatest natural tourist attractions. "The road that accommodates tens of thousands of local and tourist vehicles each year is single lane, there are no overtaking lanes, few opportunities to overtake, the roads are pockmarked with potholes and have no sealed shoulders.

Left to deteriorate
Mr O'Brien said, "This is one of our nation's top-line tourist destinations and yet the road to access it is appalling. Figures from last summer indicate the Prom had upwards of 197,000 visitors and yet the road is left to deteriorate."
Mr O'Brien said the poor roads in the area were also of great concern to local industry. Aside from being a lifestyle and tourism destination, this is a key dairy and beef production area and the roads are not good enough.
"Having cattle trucks and tankers alongside holiday makers with their boats and caravans on a single lane road with no sealed shoulders is a recipe for disaster. It's time the government ensured our roads were up to scratch so that tourism and local industry can thrive and ensure that everyone is safe on our roads." Mr O'Brien concluded.
