Bass Coast Shire Council broadening youth horizons
Bass Coast Shire Council taking steps to prepare the youth for life beyond the classroom.
Bass Coast Shire Council is providing practical support and industry expertise to students, as part of a Gippsland-wide innovative learning program, Broadening Horizons.
Now in its fourth year, the Broadening Horizons program brings employers and secondary schools together to design and deliver a community-based project.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, is proud of the real-world learning opportunities the program provides to young people.
"Classroom learning is taken to another level when students work on challenges and projects that actually exist," Cr Rothfield said.
"This program is a great example of local government working closely with the school community to prepare students for life beyond the classroom."
In working with students, workplaces have lots to gain from the insights and creative minds of young people. This was most evident at the recent presentation given by Korumburra Secondary College students to Bass Coast Shire Council.
"Students presented ideas on how to make our website more user-friendly, which ties in perfectly with our current website redevelopment project."
The program involves secondary schools partnering with one or two employers. The focus of the program is to:
- Link the world of work into students’ every day learning
- Make learning about the workforce practical at year 8 levels
- Provide learning time at both sites: workplace and classroom
- Build a positive mindset for students
- Engage parents and families into the learning to build aspiration, support and understanding.
The Broadening Horizons Project was initiated by the Gippsland Regional Managers’ Forum and the Department of Education and Training.
